biography
early life

rubén sole male offspring of julián ruiz gabiña , wife, future politician dolores ibárruri. among 6 children, , sister amaya ones become adults; 4 of siblings died young.


while still child, ibárruri took part in political activities. when thirteen, distributed illegal communist leaflets , had evade police. in 1935, after mother imprisoned, , amaya sent soviet union. rubén resided in moscow bolshevik leader panteleimon lepeshinsky , wife, biologist olga lepeshinskaya. took apprenticeship in joseph stalin 1st state factory automobiles.


spanish civil war

after outbreak of spanish civil war, sixteen-year-old ibárruri approached spanish embassy in moscow under pseudonym , - after lying age - volunteered fight on republican side. joined spanish republican army mountain infantry unit in major juan modesto s corps. when general alexander rodimtsev met him in august 1937, held rank of corporal. after participating in battle of ebro, promoted sergeant.


during february 1939, ibárruri crossed pyrenees france, remnants of defeated republican popular army, , interned in argelès-sur-mer concentration camp. managed escape , reach soviet embassy in paris, returned moscow @ april, reuniting mother , sister.


ibárruri attempted enroll stalingrad military flight school, rejected on medical grounds. entered moscow all-russian central executive committee military academy. after graduation, second lieutenant ibárruri stationed in machine-gun platoon of moscow 1st proletarian division s 175th company.


world war ii

in july 1941, after germany invaded soviet union, 1st division confronted enemy in town of borisov, near berezina river. ibárruri s platoon covered retreat of regiment across river. severely wounded during battle, , evacuated rear. in september 1941, president mikhail kalinin had awarded him order of red banner.


after recovering, lieutenant ibárruri joined 35th guards rifle division, formed 8th airborne corps in august 1942, commander of 100th machine gun company. division consigned 62nd army, defended stalingrad. when arriving in area, division rushed village of samofalovka, 30 kilometres north-west of stalingrad, halt advance of german army toward volga river. night of 23 august 1942, part of 35th reached area. ibárruri s battalion, commanded captain a.a. stolyarov, deployed in kotluban train station , attacked german forces. stolyarov killed in fight, , ibárruri replaced him, leading soldiers while rest of division arrived. in morning, hit bullet in abdomen , sent field hospital in srednyaya akhtuba - town on other side of volga, 20 kilometres east of stalingrad. died wound on 3 september 1942.


on 2 november 1948, remains re-buried in square of fallen heroes, on mamayev kurgan. on 22 august 1956, posthumously awarded title hero of soviet union. asteroid 2423 ibarruri named in honour @ 1972.
