sigala s honoring father
the sigalovada sutta takes place when lord buddha encountered youth called sigala in morning stroll. young man, in drenched attire, prostrated , worshipped 4 compass direction (east, south, west , north), plus earth (down) , sky (up). when asked lord buddha why did so, youth sigala replied had been told late father , thought right uphold father s wishes. lord buddha then, based on sigala s point of view, taught him on how noble 1 (pali: ariya) should worship 6 directions.
avoid evil ways
the buddha first describes fourteen evil ways should avoided householder. buddha enumerates these evil ways avoided as:
