on september 21st, 2016, on twitter account, reynolds suggested drivers feeling threatened protesters objecting fatal shooting of keith lamont scott in charlotte, north carolina should run them down. tweet consisted of words run them down , link news story protestors. on september 22nd, 2016, erik wemple of washington post, published article titled instapundit glenn reynolds defends run them down tweet during charlotte unrest. article contained original tweet , interview in reynolds said:

twitter suspended reynolds account, restored shortly after , told him delete tweet in order allowed use twitter again. university of tennessee released statement investigating reynolds not condone language encourages violence. on september 27, 2016, law school s dean melanie wilson issued statement announce university had ended short-lived investigation recommendation no disciplinary action taken. dean wilson wrote reynolds tweet ...was exercise of first amendment rights. nevertheless, tweet offended many members of our community , beyond, , understand hurt , frustration feel. usa today said reynolds had violated newspaper’s standards , suspended column 1 month. reynolds issued apology @ request of usa today saying:
