the višegrad bridge commissioned grand vizier mehmed paša sokolović, exercised power on long period @ summit of ottoman empire during reign of 3 sultans tribute native region , symbol of trade , prosperity. construction of bridge took place between 1571 , 1577. major renovations of bridge have taken place in 1664, 1875, 1911, 1940 , 1950–52. 3 of 11 arches destroyed during world war , 5 damaged during world war ii subsequently restored.

during 1992–95 war in bosnia , herzegovina, hundreds of bosniaks killed on bridge bosnian serb militias.


the bridge received unesco world heritage listing in 2007.


renovation

the turkish international co-operation , development agency (tika) provided 3.5 million euros restoration of mehmed paša sokolović bridge. representatives of tika, bih commission co-operation unesco, republika srpska cultural ministry , višegrad municipality signed agreement renovate bridge on 19 april 2010.
