the principality located on southwestern edge of harz mountain range in present-day south lower saxony. included 2 separate territories, 1 around town of einbeck grubenhagen castle, , domain around towns of osterode , duderstadt (ceded mainz in 1366) clausthal, herzberg, , herzberg castle. dominion comprised eastern exclave of elbingerode, today part of saxony-anhalt.
