potential contestants go through rigorous series of steps before possibility of becoming next american ninja warrior. on 3,500 athletes have attempted conquer mount midoriyama , become american ninja warrior since series began in 2009.
contestant eligibility
there requirements possible contestants have meet before participating @ regional qualifier. contestants must legal residents of , in decent physical shape. there no upper age limit, participants must @ least 21 years old. contestants have fill out 20-page questionnaire , make video themselves. required length of video has differed on years. submission video length requirements have varied 2 8 minutes, depending on season. producers select 100 applicants each region participate in regional qualifiers. producers select 20 30 walk-ons in cases wait weeks camping outside chance on course. 1,000 people applied compete in season one, 5,000 people in season 6, 50,000 in season 7, , 70,000 in season 8.

in each city, competitors producers have selected competing on 6 - obstacle course in hopes of making city finals. top 30 finishers make city finals. also, in season 9, top 5 women make it. first obstacle quintuple steps or floating steps , same rest of cities season. comes obstacle moves along tracks. next either balance obstacle or upper-body obstacle. other type fourth. fifth grip obstacle, , sixth warped wall. in season 9, balance or grip obstacle obstacle found in stage 1 of mount midoryama. obstacles given sideline reporter @ beginning of every episode.

city finals
city finals courses follow-up each city qualifying course. qualifying , finals courses filmed back-to-back, on 2 days. top 15 finishers overall each city finals course move on compete in national finals. in addition, of season 9, top 2 women in each city finals guaranteed advance, if not finish in top 15. small prizes ranging $1,000 $5,000 awarded first, second, , third finishers complete finals course.
mount midoriyama
mount midoriyama finals course american ninja warrior. located on las vegas strip, consists of 4 stages, each containing various obstacles of increasing difficulty. competitors must complete of 23 obstacles. should complete first 3 stages, competitors advance stage 4, competitors attempt climb 75-foot rope climb, known mount midoriyama, in 30 seconds or less. should competitor achieve total victory, or receives money prize of $500,000 season 4 season 6, , $1,000,000 season 7. beginning in season 8, if multiple competitors complete stage 4, competitors split prize money, although in prior years fastest competitor receive full amount.
stage 1 consists of obstacles test competitors agility , speed. first stage timed, , competitors complete within time limit of 2:30 advance stage 2.
stage 2 consists of obstacles test competitors strength , speed. competitors must complete challenges strain upper-body strength (such salmon ladder) without running out of time. in first stage, competitors finish within time limit of 4:00 move on stage 3.
stage 3 consists of obstacles test competitors upper body , grip strength. stage in mt. midoriyama has no time limit. stages 1 , 2, competitors complete stage 3 move on.
stage 4 of mt. midoriyama 75-foot rope climb. competitors must complete rope climb , hit buzzer in under 30 seconds.
