in 2000, defeated incumbent mayor bud johnson 57% of vote. served 1 two-year term.


on april 5, 2005, thompson won unexpected victory in common council election in tomah, wisconsin. thompson not running position was, unknown him, subject of write-in campaign. receive 31 of 34 votes. opponent , john buick, received 1 vote thompson himself. thompson declined accept position, later reconsidered. sworn in on april 15, 2005, , served 2 years on tomah common council.


in 2008, thompson took place of outgoing mayor charles ludeking, whom defeated in mayoral election on april 1 2–1 margin. thompson sworn office second (non-consecutive) two-year term mayor of tomah on april 15, 2008.


2002 gubernatorial campaign

thompson became libertarian party nominee in april , ran against democrat jim doyle, state attorney general, , incumbent republican governor scott mccallum, former lieutenant governor had assumed office in 2001 after governor tommy thompson left become u.s. secretary of health , human services.


the 2002 governor s race considered have been negative campaign in state s history. in response thompson, publicly critical of negative campaigning of both major party candidates, became more viable option voters, , garnered 10% of vote. doyle won election plurality of 45% of vote, becoming state s first democratic governor since anthony earl defeated in 1986. doyle sworn in on january 6, 2003 @ state capitol in madison.


2010 state senate campaign

thompson announced in october 2009 run republican 31st district wisconsin state senate seat in 2010, against incumbent kathleen vinehout. 31st district includes of trempealeau, buffalo, jackson , pepin counties, , parts of monroe, pierce, dunn, eau claire , clark counties. on november 2, 2010, vinehout defeated thompson, still campaigning office, despite being diagnosed pancreatic cancer in september 2010. on november 9, 2010, requested recount 352 votes separating thompson vinehout. on november 19, 2010, conceded election vinehout.

ed thompson died of pancreatic cancer on october 22, 2011, in tomah.
