in 1147 nicholas basset founded cistercian abbey here daughter house of waverley abbey in surrey. abbey owned property in west oxfordshire, east gloucestershire , @ priddy in somerset. in 1382 abbey bought manor of fifield, oxfordshire. abbey dissolved in october 1536.


after dissolution abbey became property of sir anthony cope of hanwell, oxfordshire, ancestor of cope baronets. in 1720 baroque country house built cope family, possibly on site of former abbey. georgian cottage in grounds of house includes three-bay vaulted chamber may remnant of original abbey buildings.


michael bishop, baron glendonbrook, purchased 18th-century property in 2013. abbey has been refurbished under ownership, including installation of large , impressive cantilever stone staircase , twenty-five kilometres of data cabling large underground car park .
