peter island volcanic island located 450 kilometres (280 mi) off coast of ellsworth land of continental antarctica. has area of 154 square kilometres (59 sq mi). island entirely covered glacier, 95% of surface covered ice. surrounding island 40-meter (130 ft) tall ice front , vertical cliffs. long stretches of ice caps supplemented rock outcrops. landing possible @ 3 points, , during short period of year in island not surrounded pack ice. island shield volcano, although not known if still active. ultra prominent peak @ 1,640 metres (5,380 ft) elevation, named lars christensen. peter island claim within 90°w , 150°w , claim not sector.
