in 1983 eighth amendment introduced constitutional ban on abortion in ireland. x case in 1992 established right of irish women abortion if pregnant woman s life @ risk because of pregnancy, including risk of suicide. later in 1992, 3 separate constitutional amendments on subject of abortion put vote. 1 proposed tighten law on abortion. twelfth amendment, have excluded risk of suicide grounds abortion rejected. thirteenth amendment, guaranteed freedom of travel obtain abortion abroad, , fourteenth amendment, guaranteed access information, both approved.


the twenty-fifth amendment second attempt exclude risk of suicide grounds abortion. introduced fianna fáil–progressive democrats coalition government led taoiseach bertie ahern. government presented amendment 1 part of comprehensive package of changes address issue of crisis pregnancy. among other measures have removed threat of suicide grounds legal abortion , have introduced new penalties of twelve years in jail, performing or assisting abortions. along government parties, catholic church favoured proposal, opposed fine gael, labour party, green party , sinn féin. proposal put referendum on 6 march 2002 narrowly rejected 629,041 (50.4%) against 618,485 (49.6%) in favour.
