the crimson-backed sunbird endemic resident breeder in western ghats of india. peak nesting season december march has been known nest in months of year in southern western ghats. 2 eggs laid in suspended nest on thin drooping branch of low tree, fern frond or shrub. both male , female take part in nest building interior built female. eggs incubated female males may involve in feeding young. incubation period 18–19 days.


these birds important pollinators of plant species.


males establish , defend feeding territories on flower bearing shrubs , trees. plants such helixanthera intermedia had lot of nectar defended more vigorously. being small birds may killed attack insects praying mantises too


although resident in many areas, may make altitudinal movements in response rains. in areas move foothills during monsoons , move higher regions after rains.
