antler s last school closed in 1981. fearing end of town, rick jorgensen , harley bud kissner thought of ways bring in newcomers school-age children town intent of keeping school open. rick thought of idea give away land , bud volunteered of 640-acre (2.6 km) farm modern homesteaders. deal stay 5 years , enroll children in antler elementary school. rick drew newspaper ad while wire service spread story. story made national network news aired twice on nbc evening edition first story stating reason increase population , second story role in reopening of town s schools land giveaway. rick received letters on including international letters germany , australia. plan worked few years, 6 families receiving plots of 5 or 9 acres (36,000 m).
