between 1945 , 1949, regensburg site of largest displaced persons (dp) camp in germany. @ peak in 1946–1947, workers district of ganghofersiedlung housed 5,000 ukrainian , 1,000 non-ukrainian refugees , displaced persons. approval of u.s. military government in american allied occupation zone, regensburg , other dp camps organised own camp postal service. in regensburg, camp postal service began operation on december 11, 1946.


at beginning of 1960s, regensburg invested lot in technical , social infrastructure attract industry. siemens first multinational company come regensburg, milestone in city s development after world war ii. in 1965, regensburg university founded, regensburg university of applied sciences established in 1971. second multinational company, bmw, came in 1986 build large production plant. since 1990s, several well-known hightech companies located in regensburg, such infineon , osram, contributing city s current wealth.


in 1997, regensburg awarded europe prize outstanding achievements in european integration.


the world heritage committee listed regensburg s old town unesco world heritage site in july 2006. largest medieval old town north of alps , preserved, dubbing italy s northern city . close stone bridge, city of regensburg established world heritage centre in historic salzstadl in 2007, detailed information on regensburg s 2000-year-old history given.
