rugby union has been international game since 1871, when scotland beat england @ raeburn place in edinburgh. ireland entered international competition in 1875, , have played matches continuously ever since. rugby world cup of more recent origin, dating 1987, when invitations sent out various national sides. entry has been through qualifying rounds ever since.


gaelic football domestic, although remains popular in areas major irish emigre populations. although game formally organised outside ireland, there no true national gaelic football teams.


however, gaelic footballers participate in 1 form of international competition – international rules football. compromise code between gaelic football , australian rules football, strictly speaking not gaelic football, although irish national side picked it. earliest game of international rules series in 1984. these prefigured australian tour of ireland in 1967 organised harry beitzel, played against domestic sides.
