agriculture main occupation of people in rural parts of region. cotton, soyabean , jawar (sorghum) essential crops grown in district. other important crops of region wheat, sunflower, canola, peanut, bajra (pearl millet), harbara (chick peas), toor (pigeon peas), urad , moong (green gram). crops dependent on monsoon. 15% of maharashtra s gross cropped area irrigated, compared national average of 32.9% in 1989–90. vidarbha s amravati division s (including akola district) share of gross cropped area under irrigation of 9%.


considered 1 of maharashtra s least developed regions, vidarbha has seen not farmers suicides deaths caused malnutrition. in tribal major reasons of recent suicide deaths of farmers in akola region , other surrounding parts of vidarbha, has rung alarm bells in maharashtra state government , government of india. bharat krishak samaj, 1 of leading organisations of farmers in india, active in akola region. has played crucial role in promoting voice of common farmers of vidarbha region attention of indian government under chairmanship of prakash shriram mankar. oil , dal mills becoming rampant in region because of crops taken. textile mills increasing support cotton growing industry.
