History 1989 Sudanese coup d'état



sudan had been engaged in bloody civil war since 1983, hundreds of thousands dead due famine. tension had been building in country prior coup between army , prime minister on both war , poor state of economy.


in february 1989 group of sudanese army officers had presented ultimatum prime minister asking either end civil war or give military means end war, resulting in government effort try , resolve conflict.


it alleged coup spurred prime minister sadiq al-mahdi s decision on 18 june 1989 arrest group of 14 military officials , 50 civilians accused of being engaged in plan overthrow government means of coup , restore former president gaafar al-nimeiry power.

on 30 june 1989, military officers under col. omar hassan al-bashir, national islamic front (nif) instigation , support, replaced sadiq al-mahdi government revolutionary command council national salvation (rcc), claiming saving country rotten political parties.


the new military junta consisted of 15 military officers (reduced 12 in 1991) assisted civilian cabinet. general al-bashir became president, chief of state, prime minister, , chief of armed forces.


the new rcc al-bashir military government banned trade unions, political parties, , other non-religious institutions. 78,000 members of army, police, , civil administration purged in order reshape government.
