in 1992, daewoo dissolved joint-venture general motors, , simultaneously decision made independently develop replacements contemporary daewoo motors products, based on older general motors models. lanos development programme formally started in autumn 1993, goal create car replace daewoo nexia daewoo s small family car.
the project began comparative study of competing models 20 different manufacturers, toyota tercel, opel astra , volkswagen golf identified competitive. 4 design studios commissioned deliver clay models presenting ideas new model s styling. giorgetto giugiaro s design chosen, , italdesign commissioned develop car s final outside , interior styling. technical side of project conducted simultaneously daewoo s development centre korea, suppliers , contractors involved in developing particular components. included ac rochester (engine components), delco chassis division (brakes, including abs), gm powertrain (automatic transmission), italdesign (body, structural analysis, electrics, prototype construction), pars passive rückhaltesysteme gmbh (airbags) , porsche (vehicle concept – research, structural analysis, suspension , brake components, , experimental production supervision).
by end of 1995, 150 prototypes built (providing 3 body styles). development programme involved extensive testing in multitude of locations. safety tests included high-speed stability , durability testing in england, , brake testing on großglockner in austria. low-temperature testing conducted in canada, sweden (arjeplog), , russia (moscow, khabarovsk) while high-temperature tests took place in (death valley), oman (nizwa), australia (alice springs), spain (barcelona), , italy (nardò). programme completed in remarkable time of 30 months approval commencement of large-scale production of lanos sedan korean market. european-market production began in 1997.
