Design Reşadiye-class battleship
line-drawing of british iron duke class; reşadiye similar design
the design reşadiye based on contemporary british king george v class, improvements had been incorporated subsequent iron duke class under construction. compared british ships, reşadiyes carried amidships main battery turret 1 deck higher, improved ability fired in heavier seas. carried heavier secondary battery, composed of 6 in (150 mm) guns instead of 4 in (100 mm) weapons in king george v class. hull shorter , wider british ships, improved turning radius, lower displacement forced compromises in armor protection , coal capacity.
general characteristics , machinery
the reşadiye design 525 feet (160 m) long between perpendiculars , 559 ft 6 in (170.54 m) long overall. ships had beam of 28 ft 10 in (8.79 m), designed displacement of 23,000 metric tons (23,000 long tons; 25,000 short tons). in service, erin displaced 22,780 t (22,420 long tons; 25,110 short tons) , 25,250 t (24,850 long tons; 27,830 short tons) @ full load. erin completed single tripod mast atop conning tower, fitted spotting top aid in gun-laying. had crew of 1,070 officers , enlisted men.
the ships powered 4 parsons steam turbines, steam provided fifteen babcock & wilcox mixed coal , oil-fired water-tube boilers. boilers trunked pair of closely spaced funnels directly aft of conning tower. engines rated @ 26,500 shaft horsepower (19,800 kw) top speed of 21 knots (39 km/h; 24 mph). erin carried 2,120 t (2,090 long tons; 2,340 short tons) of coal , 710 t (700 long tons; 780 short tons) of fuel oil, , had cruising radius of 5,100 nautical miles (9,400 km; 5,900 mi) @ speed of 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph).
armament , armor
as designed, reşadiye class armed main battery of ten 13.5-inch (340 mm) 45-caliber guns , sixteen 6 in (150 mm) 50-caliber guns, , 4 21 in (530 mm) torpedo tubes. 13.5 in guns mark vi type manufactured armstrong whitworth, , mounted in 5 twin turrets, on centerline. first 2 in superfiring pair forward, 1 amidships directly aft of funnels, , last 2 in superfiring pair, aft of rear conning tower. 6 in guns mounted individually in casemates along upper deck, 8 each beam. torpedo tubes submerged in hull, 2 on each side of ship. completed, number of smaller guns added erin, including 6 6-pounder 57 mm (2.2 in) guns , 2 76 mm (3.0 in) mk anti-aircraft guns.
the ships protected armored belt 12 in (300 mm) thick in central portion, , reduced 4 in (100 mm) on either end of ship. transverse bulkheads connected ends of belt 8 in (200 mm) thick. horizontal protection consisted of armored deck 3 in (76 mm) thick on central part of ship, covered ammunition magazines , machinery spaces, , reduced 1.5 in (38 mm) thick elsewhere. forward conning tower had 12 in thick sides. main battery gun turrets had 11 in (280 mm) thick faces, while barbettes supported them had 10 in (250 mm) thick sides, lower section behind main belt reduced 3 in.
