hence, first real step towards development of western education in africa primitive methodist mission commenced @ oron, training institute boys (boarding) built. direct outcome of proposal made reverend nathanial boocock in association colleagues. during meeting of executive committee of primitive methodist missionary society (p.m.m.s) in birmingham, boocock had proposed:
“that training institute erected @ oron, can receive boarders our mission schools in fernando po
and promising youths our mission schools in mainland (nigeria). that, while general education be
given may include instruction in carpentry , other useful trades, pre-eminent aim of masters shall be
to train youths view becoming native teaching evangelists”
boocock’s proposal contained size of building materials, school fees, scholarship needy deserving students, , type of principal required. resolution adopted after meeting on 10th of may 1904, £1000 raised christian endeavour societies, popular movement among primitive methodists in england, defray cost of institute, , arrival of rev. w. j. ward in august 1905, school formerly commenced 2 (2) teachers , sixteen (16) students on roll. 3 of original sixteen students boarders. first set of buildings erected rev. r. banham.
