dunnell moved minnesota in 1865, settling first in winona, in 1865, , moving owatonna in 1867. became member of minnesota house of representatives in 1867 , served state superintendent of public instruction april 2, 1867, august 1870, when resigned.


he elected republican 42nd, 43rd, 44th, 45th, 46th, , 47th congresses, (march 4, 1871 – march 3, 1883); unsuccessful candidate speaker of forty-seventh congress; not candidate renomination in 1882; unsuccessful candidate election united states senate in 1883; elected 51st congress, (march 4, 1889 – march 3, 1891); unsuccessful candidate reelection in 1890 52nd congress; delegate republican national convention in 1892.


he 1 of founders , member of board of trustees of minnesota academy, high school boys , girls in owatonna, being renamed pillsbury academy in 1887, , becoming military academy high school boys in 1920.


dunnell died in owatonna in 1904 , buried in forest hill cemetery. namesake of city of dunnell, minnesota.
