medora founded in 1883 along transcontinental rail line of northern pacific railway french nobleman marquis de mores, named city after wife medora von hoffman. marquis de mores wanted ship refrigerated meat chicago via railroad. built meat packing plant purpose , house named chateau de mores, museum.


in evening of april 7, 1903, president theodore roosevelt visited medora on presidential tour of western united states. of badlands residents turned out greet him on whistle stop. roosevelt later recalled “the entire population of badlands down smallest baby had gathered meet me… felt man, old friend; , if had been hostile me in old days when divided sinister bickering , jealousies , hatreds of frontier communities, firmly believed had been staunch friends , admirers. shook hands them and…i regretted not spend 3 hours them. local hotel changed name same year rough riders hotel. in 1986 hotel purchased , operated theodore roosevelt medora foundation.


the city of medora home popular medora musical , city has become 1 of popular tourist attractions in state.
