the first magazine published @ westminster, polytechnic magazine, founded in 19th century. published weekly, fortnightly , monthly, polytechnic magazine formed wide-ranging record of unique institution @ heart of london. in 1879, quintin hogg began magazine when young men’s christian institute based in covent garden. called home news , , home tidings issue 2, in february 1888 renamed polytechnic magazine . regular subjects included personal news of members (births, marriages, deaths , emigrations), sports , social clubs reports, commentaries on london events , current affairs, news of polytechnic women’s activities , old quintinians, reports polytechnic touring association holidays, examination results , prizes. there advertisements (commercial , small ads), religious articles, lists of library stock, , general letters editor. during world war 1 magazine took on important role enabling members contact , keep track of 1 another, co-ordinating relief efforts , boosting morale. wartime issues include lists of men have enrolled, photographs of killed , reports front. magazine can accessed free via university s archives.


student forum (1949–1953)

during mid 20th century, university saw yet student-led publication called student forum . typescript newsletter, student forum later printed newspaper demand grew. regular items included rag events; postponement of student players production; debating society reports; review of recent jazz concerts; editorial regarding attendance @ general meetings; film reviews; student organisation in india; best-dressed girl in poly; sports reports; , advertisement cameo polytechnic [cinema]. nevertheless, notably student forum covers formation of university of westminster student union (uwsu) known polytechnic students union. however, newspaper reached end of lifespan in 1953, lasting 6 years.


the smoke (magazine) & qh (1993–present)

in 90s, union began expressing interest in new print media @ university. smoke printed in 1992 official magazine of university of westminster students union (uwsu). though, in 2006 smoke had switched newspaper format, being published fortnightly during term time. however, newspaper format later scrapped smaller magazine format. in 2012, growing number of students began expressing dissatisfaction towards quality of student media @ westminster. result, independent online editorial dubbed heurist emerged student outcry. name, heurist coined founder, ash chetri, after word heuristics . definition describes heurist platform enables person learn & discover (a nod towards setting independent student media outside guidance of uwsu). in reaction, uwsu launched university-wide newspaper of own, quintin hogg (informally known qh or hogg ) in september 2012. understood abbreviation qh refers quintin hogg s initials , pen name, in several articles polytechnic magazine, quintin frequent writer for. initially, qh served exclusively publication school of social sciences humanities & languages (sshl) @ flagship regent street campus. however, due surge in popularity , student participation, uwsu made decision circulate newspaper 4 of university s campuses. qh serves main student publication @ university.
