in january, 2003, union offered enter binding arbitration university, administrators refused offer. one-week-long strike took place between march 3 , march 7, 2003, garnering support cornel west, jesse jackson, john sweeney, dennis rivera, john wilhelm, , andy stern, thousands of workers, thousands of members of community marched on university on strike s first day demand equal access jobs , desegregation of university s hiring structures, , hundreds of undergraduates, staged walkout on strike s snowy fourth day , held classes in street.
with negotiations dead on summer, federation struck again in late august, after group of retirees occupied university s investment office demand know status , whereabouts of university-administered pension fund. strike settled on september 18, 2003 after several days of negotiations mediated new haven mayor john destefano , 10,000-strong labor march shut down downtown new haven 5 days earlier.
in april, 2005, geso struck again 1 week , continues campaign, support of rest of federation, union recognition.
