while ottomans held sway in hungary, jews of transylvania (at time independent principality) fared well. @ instance of abraham sassa, jewish physician of constantinople, prince gabriel bethlen of transylvania granted letter of privileges (june 18, 1623) spanish jews anatolia. community of judaizing szekler sabbatarians, had existed in transylvania since 1588, persecuted , driven underground in 1638.
