hpf821 departed ilopango international airport, el salvador, carrying cargo of 60 collapsible ak-47 rifles, 50,000 ak-47 rifle cartridges, several dozen rpg-7 grenade launchers , 150 pairs of jungle boots . aircraft flew along western coast of nicaragua costa rica, entering costa rica northwest. here, turned , headed nicaragua. after entering nicaraguan airspace near border costa rica, aircraft maneuvering down towards 2,500 feet in preparation dropping off cargo, when targeted sandinista sa-7 surface-to-air missile. crashed near san carlos, río san juan, killing 3 of 4 crew; fourth, eugene hasenfus, had parachuted safety, captured within 24 hours.
