the irish channel zoned schools in new orleans public schools (nops) , recovery school district (rsd).


the batiste cultural arts academy k-8 charter school operated charter management organization renew schools located in former live oak elementary school building in irish channel. of 2012 has on 600 students. in 2012 president s committee on arts , humanities stated school 1 of 8 participate in turnaround arts program.


after hurricane katrina, live oak school directly operated rsd. in 2009 75% of fourth graders @ live oak elementary school failed leap test. in 2010 school had performance score of 40 below 65 level considered academically unacceptable. cindy chang of times-picayune said former live oak elementary school performing poorly paul vallas, superintendent of rsd, gave school renew charter management school group, specialized in taking control of poor performing schools. renew repurposed school batiste academy. gary robichaux, executive director of renew, had full control on school s hiring , firing, , kept 15% of previous teaching staff , brought younger teachers replace them.
