ancient sage dadhichi said have lived on banks of sabarmati river.
the ahmedabad popular settlement near bank of sabarmati river earlier known ashaval or ashapalli. in tenth century ashaval 1 of chief places in gujarat described al-biruni. peopled, busy, trading, manufacturing , rich town around 1150. in eleventh century, karna of chaulukya dynasty ruling anhilwad patan (1072-1094) made town capital, adorned 2 temples, 1 kochrab, site still known, , other jayanti devi, , named karnavati (karna s town) or shrinagar (prosperous city) , rajnagar (king s town). when chaulukya rule weakened in second half of 13th century, vaghela dynasty rose power in gujarat in 1243. formed short stable rule in region ended in 1299.
delhi sultanate rule
in 1297, gujarat conquered allauddin khilji, ruler of principal state in north india @ time, delhi sultanate. army destroyed temples , domes of town. succeeding delhi sultan muhammad bin tughluq halted in town during suppression of gujarat mutiny (1347).
