eastman , laird s teenage mutant ninja turtles premiered in may 1984, @ comic book convention held @ local sheraton hotel in portsmouth, new hampshire. published mirage studios in oversized magazine-style format using black , white artwork on cheap newsprint, limited print run of 3,250 copies. through clever media kit included press release in comic buyer s guide #542 , full-page ad placed in comic buyer s guide #547, public s interest piqued , began turtle phenomenon. small print runs made these comics , trade magazines instant collector items, , within months, trading on 50 times cover price. name mirage studios chosen because of eastman , laird s lack of professional art studio @ start of career, before creation made them both multimillionaires.

mirage published bimonthly companion book entitled tales of teenage mutant ninja turtles, featuring art ryan brown , jim lawson, designed fill in gaps of continuity in tmnt universe. put original series , tales in same mainstream continuity, , 2 canon each other. title s first volume 1987–1989, released in alternating months regular eastman , laird book. 7 issues of volume 1 have been collected in trade paperback form twice, , 25 issues of volume 2 have been collected in trades of 5 issues each.

as tmnt phenomenon proliferated other media, eastman , laird found administrating international merchandising juggernaut. however, prevented 2 creators participating in day-to-day work of writing , illustrating monthly comic book. so, many guest artists invited showcase unique talents in tmnt universe. breadth of diversity found in various short stories gave series disjointed, anthology-like feel. fans stuck series, , intended one-shot became continuing series lasted 129 issues, spanning 4 separate volumes (having 62, 13, 23, , 32 issues in 4 distinct volumes).

in june 1996, image comics took on publishing title in considered volume 3 of series. more action-oriented tmnt series , although notable inflicting major physical changes on main characters, peter laird, co-creator of tmnt, has said volume no longer in canon began publishing volume 4 @ mirage publishing. explanation, offered in pages of volume 4 (issue #8) letter column: didn t feel right.

after taking series image comics, mirage studios resumed publication of fourth volume in december 2001, under simple title tmnt. after publication of issue number 28, writer peter laird placed series on eight-month hiatus devote himself production of 2007 tmnt movie. however, after 8 months had passed, mirage s official website went on list series in indefinite hiatus . in january 2008, mirage had confirmed series return in may 2008. issues 29 , 30 had limited printing of 1,000 copies each, , available through official tmnt website. although purchase agreement nickelodeon allows laird produce 18 comics year set in original mirage continuity, no new material released in next few years. latest issue of tmnt volume 4 issue #32 came out in print may 4, 2014, , online on may 9, 2014, 4 years after issue #31 last released.
