the new york central did not order new equipment empire service, preferring rehabilitate existing equipment. 40 64-seat coaches, built pullman-standard in 1946, refurbished in 1967–1968. 21 coaches same pool rebuilt 50-seat coach-buffet cars. amtrak acquired equipment when took on penn central s passenger trains in 1971. cars remained on empire service under amtrak mid-1970s. typical train between new york , albany consisted of 2 coaches , coach-buffet or snack bar coach. trains operated west of albany had additional coaches.
