the nominate subspecies distributed in india east of desert region , south of himalayas extending west , south of india , sri lanka. found on plains going 2400 m in southern india , 1700 m in himalayas. race brevirostris found in dry zone arabian peninsula iran, afghanistan, pakistan until dry zone of rajasthan , gujarat. these may winter south near goa. form has slight tinge of green in pectoral yellow tufts. race intermedius extends border of orissa , andhra pradesh northwards bangladesh, myanmar , indochina. these movements of these birds not understood. male ringed in bharatpur recovered in dehra dun, 350 km north.
