History Cochise County, Arizona
cochise county created on february 1, 1881, out of eastern portion of pima county. took name legendary chiricahua apache war chief cochise. county seat tombstone until 1929 when moved bisbee. notable men once held position of county sheriff johnny behan, served first sheriff of new county, , 1 of main characters during events leading , following gunfight @ o.k. corral. later, in 1886, texas john slaughter became sheriff. lawman jeff milton , lawman/outlaw burt alvord both served deputies under slaughter.
a syndicated television series aired 1956 1958, sheriff of cochise starring john bromfield, filmed in bisbee. jimmy stewart movie broken arrow , subsequent television show of same name starring john lupton, aired 1956 1958, took place (but not filmed) in cochise county.
