colt model 655 , 656 sniper variants

with expanding vietnam war, colt developed 2 rifles of m16 pattern evaluation possible light sniper or designated marksman rifles. colt model 655 m16a1 special high profile standard a1 rifle heavier barrel , scope bracket attached rifle s carry handle. colt model 656 m16a1 special low profile had special upper receiver no carrying handle. instead, had low-profile iron sight adjustable windage , weaver base mounting scope, precursor colt , picatinny rails. had hooded front iron sight in addition heavy barrel. both rifles came standard either leatherwood/realist scope 3–9× adjustable ranging telescope. of them fitted sionics noise , flash suppressor. neither of these rifles ever standardized.

these weapons can seen in many ways predecessors of u.s. army s sdm-r , usmc s sam-r weapons.

xm177


a united states air force gau-5/a carbine

in vietnam, soldiers issued carbine version of m16 called xm177. xm177 had shorter 10 in (254 mm) barrel , telescoping stock, made substantially more compact. possessed combination flash hider/sound moderator reduce problems muzzle flash , loud report. air force s gau-5/a (xm177) , army s xm177e1 variants differed on latter’s inclusion of forward assist, although gau-5s have forward assist. final air force gau-5/a , army xm177e2 had 11.5 in (292 mm) barrel longer flash/sound suppressor. lengthening of barrel support attachment of colt s own xm148 40 mm grenade launcher. these versions known colt commando model commonly referenced , marketed car-15. variants issued in limited numbers special forces, helicopter crews, air force pilots, air force security police military working dog (mwd) handlers, officers, radio operators, artillerymen, , troops other front line riflemen. usaf gau-5a/as later equipped longer 14.5-inch (370 mm) 1/12 rifled barrels 2 shorter versions worn out. 14.5-inch (370 mm) barrel allowed use of miles gear , bayonets used sub-machine guns (as air force described them). 1989, air force started replace earlier barrels 1/7 rifled models use m855-round. weapons given redesignation of guu-5/p.

these used british special air service during falklands war.

the m231 firing port weapon (fpw) adapted version of m16 assault rifle firing ports on m2 bradley. infantry s normal m16s long use in buttoned fighting vehicle, fpw developed provide suitable weapon role.

mk 4 mod 0

the mk 4 mod 0 variant of m16a1 produced u.s. navy seals during vietnam war , adopted in april 1970. differed basic m16a1 in being optimized maritime operations , coming equipped sound suppressor. of operating parts of rifle coated in kal-guard, hole of 0.25 inches (6.4 mm) drilled through stock , buffer tube drainage, , o-ring added end of buffer assembly. weapon reportedly carried depth of 200 feet (60 m) in water without damage. initial mk 2 mod 0 blast suppressor based on u.s. army s human engineering lab s (hel) m4 noise suppressor. hel m4 vented gas directly action, requiring modified bolt carrier. gas deflector added charging handle prevent gas contacting user. thus, hel m4 suppressor permanently mounted though allowed normal semi-automatic , automatic operation. if hel m4 suppressor removed, weapon have manually loaded after each single shot. on other hand, mk 2 mod 0 blast suppressor considered integral part of mk 4 mod 0 rifle, function if suppressor removed. mk 2 mod 0 blast suppressor drained water more , did not require modification bolt carrier or charging handle. in late 1970s, mk 2 mod 0 blast suppressor replaced mk 2 blast suppressor made knight s armament company (kac). kac suppressor can submerged , water drain out in less 8 seconds. operate without degradation if rifle fired @ maximum rate of fire. u.s. army replaced hel m4 simpler studies in operational negation of insurgency , counter-subversion (sionics) maw-a1 noise , flash suppressor.

us navy mk 12 special purpose rifle

developed increase effective range of soldiers in designated marksman role, u.s. navy developed mark 12 special purpose rifle (spr). configurations in service vary, core of mark 12 spr 18 heavy barrel muzzle brake , free float tube. tube relieves pressure on barrel caused standard handguards , increases potential accuracy of system. common higher magnification optics ranging 6× power trijicon acog leupold mark 4 tactical rifle scopes. firing mark 262 mod 0 ammunition 77gr open tip match bullet, system has official effective range of 600+ meters. published reports of confirmed kills beyond 800 m iraq , afghanistan not uncommon.

the m4 carbine developed various outgrowths of these designs, including number of 14.5-inch (368 mm)-barreled a1 style carbines. xm4 (colt model 727) started trials in mid-1980s, barrel of 14.5 inches (370 mm). officially adopted replacement m3 grease gun (and beretta m9 , m16a2 select troops) in 1994, used great success in balkans , in more recent conflicts, including afghanistan , iraq theaters. m4 carbine has three-round burst firing mode, while m4a1 carbine has automatic firing mode. both have picatinny rail on upper receiver, allowing carry handle/rear sight assembly replaced other sighting devices.

the heckler & koch hk416 assault rifle designed , manufactured heckler & koch. based on m16, , conceived improvement based on colt m4 carbine family issued u.s. military, notable inclusion of hk-proprietary short-stroke gas piston system derived heckler & koch g36. hk416 used united states navy seals kill osama bin laden.

the diemaco c7 , c8 updated variants of m16 developed , used canadian forces , manufactured colt canada. c7 further development of experimental m16a1e1. earlier m16s, can fired in either single shot or automatic mode, instead of burst function selected m16a2. c7 features structural strengthening, improved handguards, , longer stock developed m16a2. diemaco changed trapdoor in buttstock make easier access , spacer of 0.5 inches (13 mm) available adjust stock length user preference. noticeable external difference between american m16a2s , diemaco c7s retention of a1 style rear sights. not apparent diemaco s use of hammer-forged barrels. canadians desired use heavy barrel profile instead.

the c7 has been developed c7a1, weaver rail on upper receiver c79 optical sight, , c7a2, different furniture , internal improvements. diemaco produced weaver rail on original c7a1 variants not meet m1913 picatinny standard, leading problems mounting commercial sights. remedied minor modification upper receiver or sight itself. since diemaco s acquisition colt form colt canada, canadian produced flattop upper receivers machined m1913 standard.

the c8 carbine version of c7. c7 , c8 used hærens jegerkommando, marinejegerkommandoen , fsk (norway), military of denmark (all branches), royal netherlands army , netherlands marine corps main infantry weapon. following trials, variants became weapon of choice of british sas.

ukraine has announced plans ukroboronservis , aeroscraft produce m16 wac47, accurized m4 variation uses standard 7.62×39mm ak-47 magazines.
new zealand has adopted lewis machine , tool company s upgraded version of m16 system replace steyr aug. cqb16 rifle fielded in 2017 , called mars-l (modular ambidextrous rifle system-light).
